About Us

Greetings (Business Overview)

The Life Science Promotion Equipment Shared Use Room (hereinafter referred to as the Shared Use Room) was established within the School of Life Science and Technology in 2017 to promote the shared use of cutting-edge equipment related to life sciences across the university. In 2017, it began by establishing the “Shimadzu Corporation Precision Instrument Analysis Room” (Suzukakedai Campus Building B1, 1st Floor), the first facility in Japan dedicated to promoting shared use of equipment through industry-academia collaboration. Supported by the Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology’s Advanced Infrastructure Sharing Promotion Project, adopted that same year, it advanced the sharing of equipment. In fiscal year 2018, a shared laboratory and shared office space, serving as the core for utilizing various shared instruments provided by laboratories within the School of Life Science and Technology, were established on the 3rd floor of Building B2 on the Suzukakedai Campus. This space began full-scale operation as the “School of Life Science and Technology Life Science Promotion Instrument Sharing Room.” Furthermore, this shared facility has worked in collaboration with the Comprehensive Center for Bio-Research Infrastructure Support, which was already established and widely used as a university-wide shared facility for bio-related research. It has strived to widely share various advanced life science-related instruments that had not previously been shared at the university, aiming to contribute to the development of life science fields at the university.

In fiscal year 2020, it began collaborating with the newly established Open Facility Center (OFC) in April of that year, which oversees research support including the promotion of university-wide equipment sharing. In April 2021, the Comprehensive Center for Bio Research Infrastructure Support, which had been responsible for supporting bio-related research across the university, merged with the OFC. Since April of that year, this Joint Utilization Office has focused on operating the shared system and promoting its use through participation in the “Open Facility Center Equipment Sharing Promotion Body,” while also working to further promote broader university-wide sharing.

The operation of the Shared Facilities Room is managed by the Research Promotion Committee established within the School of Life Science and Technology. Additionally, the “Life Science Shared Facilities Support Office” (comprising 7 members: 1 Professor, 1 Associate Professor, 1 Assistant Professor, and 4 technical/administrative support staff) is located within this Shared Facilities Room. This office maintains and manages the shared equipment and shared laboratories administered by the Shared Facilities Room.

This shared facility received support from the Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology’s Advanced Infrastructure Sharing Promotion Project for three years, from 2017 to 2020, during which it was established and promoted. It achieved a new start toward self-sufficiency in April 2020. Starting in April of that same year, in addition to the ongoing maintenance and management of shared equipment and laboratories, we will further advance our operations through independent activities such as conducting various collaborative research projects and strengthening commissioned work. This will enable us to achieve greater self-sufficiency and promote the shared use of even more life science-related equipment, thereby contributing more significantly to the educational and research activities of our university.

Management System

The operational strategy for the “Faculty of Bioscience and Biotechnology Life Science Promotion Equipment Shared Use Room” (hereinafter referred to as the Shared Use Room) is determined by the “Faculty of Bioscience and Biotechnology Research Planning Promotion Council,” composed of the Dean of the Faculty, the Vice Dean (Research), and faculty members affiliated with the Faculty and Graduate School. The “School of Life Science and Technology Life Science Shared Use Support Office” (current structure: 1 Professor, 1 Associate Professor, 1 Assistant Professor, and 4 Technical/Administrative Support Staff, totaling 7 members) maintains and manages the equipment and laboratories of the Shared Use Facility and serves as the user contact point. The Shared Facilities Room actively collaborates with the Open Facility Center and industry partners, focusing on operating shared systems and promoting their use. Through equipment sharing, it strives to contribute significantly to the university’s educational and research activities.
